North By Northeast

North by Northeast brings together a collection of images from recent trips to Staithes and Whitby on North Yorkshire’s East Coast, and to the stunning River Tees, in County Durham, which once marked the northern most border of Yorkshire.

Classic Staithes, North Yorkshire

The classic shot of Staithes, taken on a warm, late September evening at full tide. Sun kissing the rooftops, streets deserted, boats on the river caught in a spider’s web of lines and ropes.

Autumn Rapids Study 1, River Tees, County Durham, England

DP0Q0307

The River Tees, running from Cross Fell in the Northern Pennines East to the North Sea, formed the historic border between the North Riding of Yorkshire and County Durham. This image was taken between the High Force and Low Force waterfalls on a warm autumn evening in 2015. Captured by the moment and the scenery I lost track of time, dancing from rock to rock, trying to find the right angle to do justice to the scene. An hour later we headed back in the twilight.

Saltburn Pier, Saltburn, North Yorkshire, England

DSC02477

Sometimes the luck is with you. Saltburn was a random pick; a flick of the coin decision as we crossed the North York Moors. We’d never been! We arrived at sunset, tide receding, the silhouette of the pier reflecting in wet sands, the sun lighting up the distant horizon, waves breaking on the shoreline. A perfect, unplanned, spontaneous moment; photography as I most enjoy it! An hour later the sun had set, surrounded by winter darkness we headed home.
